I have fun memories of playing the Simon memory game with my kids years ago. Thus, it was nice to see that it’s back on the market for a new generation to enjoy. It’s not only back, but this version gets excellent reviews online just like its predecessor.

I decided to purchase the latest Simon electronic game as a surprise gift for my son. It was such a hit that I ended up buying another to keep at my house so that the grandkids and the whole family can enjoy it when we get together.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this fun game,  it’s a round-shaped electronic game with four large, colored buttons.  It’s sort of an electronic version of the classic “Simon Says” kids game that was played at parties and on school yards back in the day. You can buy Simon here.

How to Play Simon

The object of the game is to remember the sequence of the buttons that Simon plays for you.  Each colored button has its own tone  that can help you remember, but there’s no guarantee.  Simon is quick with his own tempo and you must repeat back the melodic sequence of buttons that he played in correct order or you are “out.” So you must think fast!

The old Simon was one of the bestselling pop culture symbols of the 70s and 80s. Today’s Simon is built around the interactive skills learned from today’s use of smartphones and video games and incorporates these skills in the game to test and improve your memory.

Features of The New Simon Game

  • It requires 3 AA batteries which are included with purchase
  • It can be played by a single player or multiple players
  • It can be played in the dark for a unique and challenging twist
  • It uses the same classic red, green, blue and yellow colored buttons as the original game
  • It’s small and can be played while holding in your lap or played on a tabletop

Since its return, it has quickly made its way to the top 10 sellers at the most popular online store out of more than 280,000 toys in the Handheld Games category. At the time of this writing, it is currently in the no. 2 spot in that category.

It routinely gets a 4.2 average rating out of more than 1500 reviews online. Many owners are those who enjoyed playing the game as children and purchased it for nostalgic reasons.

Back in the day when the game first made its debut, there weren’t as many tech toys or app games for kids to play with as there are today. However, even, though, today’s kids are surrounded by sophisticated tech toys and by all kinds of educational and “smart apps,  children teens and adults will all enjoy playing the simple but fun Simon electronic game.

The game is extremely affordable. Even though it is electronic, it actually costs less than many board games with price typically under $20. That’s a good price for a game that the whole family can enjoy. It helps all ages improve their memory.  It makes a good gift for grandparents and other seniors who may be facing memory loss issues.

The premise of the game is simple, but the game play is very addictive. I am sure Simon will continue to become an iconic hit just like it was in the 70s and 80s.
